Guardian ad Litem Program
Twelfth Judicial Circuit

Be the difference in a child’s life.
Roles and responsibilities
As a Guardian ad Litem (GAL) volunteer you will have the satisfaction of knowing you helped change the script in a child's life by performing these important roles:

Information collector
The GAL collects information from various sources, such as personal interviews with the child, parents and other relatives, medical and mental health professionals, teachers and child care professionals. The GAL also reviews pertinent documents relating to the child and family, including school, medical and mental health records.

Reporter
The GAL assembles all the information collected into a written report for the Court. The report includes the GAL's recommendation for the best place for the child to live while outside of his/her parent's care. Most importantly, the report includes the child's wishes.

Spokesperson
The GAL speaks out on the child's behalf. The GAL is the one to push and prod everyone involved to find the child a safe, permanent home as quickly as possible. The GAL ensures that everyone involved focuses on the child's needs and wishes during the court process.

Monitor
By visiting with the child in his/her home the GAL helps to make sure the child is safe in that home and that his/her needs are being met. By maintaining frequent contact with the child, the parents, the child welfare agency and service providers, such as parenting instructors and therapists, the GAL ensures that orders of the Court are followed.
