You don't need a background
in social work, the legal profession or mental health.
You don't even need to be a parent. Anyone over 19
years of age with the ability to clear the screening
process (pre- and post-training interviews, two
personal references and a criminal background check),
complete entry-level training and courtroom
observation, and the capacity and willingness to speak
up for a child in court can become a certified
volunteer Guardian ad Litem.
Training
Volunteers must attend a
half-day orientation seminar, which provides an
overview of the court system, the child welfare system
and the roles and responsibilities of a volunteer GAL.
The additional three days of training will include
information on:
child development
dynamics of child abuse and
neglect
attachment and separation
issues
techniques for interviewing
and gathering information
